Something New About Digg
Antiquities inevitably fall behind. To be on top and stay on top it is absolutely vital to change. Digg is an example of practicing this evolution rule. Yesterday we all observed a new appearance of the popular service and reviewed the new functionality. Unfortunately, soon after the upgrade Digg was suddenly down and those of us willing to try out the new features had only an excusal page:

I won’t go into describing what Digg is: judging by having you reading this post I guess you already know what it is all about.
So of course when you first visit the upgraded Digg you see changes in its interface: information blocks rearranged, navigation links moved to the upper part of the screen, color set slightly changed. Besides, Digg has finally gone widescreen.
But of course it’s not the design changes that made all the blogs scream about Digg yesterday. New and long-expected features were launched yesterday.
The first novelty is the Podcasts section (in bеta, what else would you expect nowadays). It is only available to registered users while in beta. Now diggers can add, dig and comment on their favorite podcasts. It’s interesting that the podcasts ratings show total rating for all the episodes of a feed but you can view separate episodes with their own ratings after entering the feed.

Sure, you could bookmark some videos on Digg before. But now the videos are aggregated in a separate section. It is still impossible to store video content here – third party hosting and applications are used (YouTube will be number one, of course). This is the main difference between the Video and Podcasts sections.

Several minor features were added as well. For example, Top 10 links in all the sections are now available. Taking into account how fast new links are submitted by diggers, this is obviously a sensible innovation.
Digg definitely aims at creating an advanced system intended to aggregate various types of content. I believe new types will be added eventually. This will enable the users to rate abundant content available online. So we will need to be patient and wait – hoping Digg will be running without any downtimes like today’s.
