The USC-Annenberg School Center for the Digital Future has recently revealed findings of a research about how Internet influences the way we communicate nowadays. It doesn’t come as a surprise to me though. Just look at how Myspace and Friendster have blossomed. They are not just websites, they are a lifestyle. Simply ask anyone around, the chances are most of them will know or even have an account there.

And there’s a significant increase of online communities available nowadays. Lots of activities are organised in real life where people usually become friends. And Internet has almost become part of our life when 56.6 percent of online community members logging on at least once per day, 23.6 percent of all internet users sharing photos online, 12.5 percent of them maintaining their own web sites, and 7.4 percent - having their own blog. It is obvious that people are getting more and more web-savvy nowadays.

Although the number of hours spent online have increased, the interaction between family members and friends was reported not to be affected. Web 2.0 based online communities are perhaps one of the reasons of all this. Without the implementation of so many features by Web 2.0 based online communities, the result might not be this great. With our younger generation getting more and more exposure to the Internet in their early ages, we can expect more and more similar success of integrating our real life with what we’re involved in the virtual world.

Study finds Internet getting more social
