my_sugar_maple.jpgHave you noticed how carbon “offsetting” or trading is becoming mainstream, with stories making it into the mass media? States like California , and even cities like Boulder CO, USA are designing programs which may interact with carbon offsetting. In Europe, the focus is on how to ensure that continent-wide systems for carbon trading or “offsetting” perform well. The culture of forest ownership is also in a period of rapid change, independent of carbon management initiatives. Because trees are where we want much of that ‘offset carbon’ to go, and to stay for many decades, we need to keep our TreeHugging eyes on forest stewardship. Seeing the forest for the carbon, right? Using North America as our example, we refer you to Lloyd’s recent post which documents a recent downside of forest change: accelerated clearing of the Boreal Forests to make non-recyclable butt wipe. (An exaggeration; but it got your attention right?) On the positive side, forests in the “lower-50” have been overall on the mend, not so much by modern intent but due to long term shifts in land ownership and markets. Mostly the recovery of US forests is a matter of land having been divided into plots so small is it increasingly less cost effective to harvest in industrial quantities, while populations concentrate in urban centers.

fat%20spaniel.jpg

Fat Spaniel is the company behind an educational display made for customers of a “green” Wal-Mart experimental supercenter. See it and some other unrelated but very interesting green projects at this Wal-Mart link (Note: the animation screen is seen under the wind energy/animation/description menu choice.). We digress. Fat Spaniel’s best trick is to shake paws with distributed power systems via Internet, which is what the Wal-Mart Kiosk was all about. Here’s the kernel of the FS promo: “Our enterprise-strength solution PV2Web™ provides independent, real-time monitoring of energy usage and generation for residential, commercial and institutional buildings. Using PV2Web, you can view the live performance of any energy system remotely, whether you are at home, in your office or on the road“.

Yesterday we wrote about coComment – a system enabling you to manage all your comments to multiple blog posts. Today I would like to continue speaking about commenting with this post about new service named Voice2Comment. The service was announced on December 22 by Voice2Page portal.

The new service is intended for owners of websites, blogs and any other online projects to enable their visitors to leave voice comments and messages.

The service works quite simple. After registration you choose a payment plan. The plans available differ in time for recording of messages. Free plan provides 15 seconds (plus advertising), $1.99 a month gives a minute (without ads), while $9.95 per month gives the users unlimited time for voice messages.

After registration you will be able to create any number of voice accounts (each of them can be customized additionally). Usually a separate account is created for every website. This means that if you have a personal blog and a corporate website, you can create two accounts and enhance both websites with voice commenting system. At that it is not necessary to register (and pay) twice.

Player interface

Then you will need to insert a special code into your website that will display a flash player at the webpage. This player is intended for website visitors to listen to messages left by other people. But to leave your own comment you don’t need the player. What you need is a usual phone. A user dials the number provided on the webpage, enters pin (also given there) and dictates a message to a machine. After this operation is done, the message appears on the website.

Every message can also be accompanied with an avatar or any other image. Besides commenting, visitors of a website can leave private messages to the website’s owner.

Sure, this is a very interesting service. But I really doubt this approach to recording comments is actually handy. At least for me the number of actions required to simply comment on something, actually leaves me absolutely unwilling to comment at all. It kind of makes me think if my opinion really matters. It would be much simpler if a usual microphone was used to record the voice messages.

pzmerry2007.jpg

Dear reader, here’s a merry Christmas (tree) to you from Barcelona. The Abetus Porex is the beautiful Christmas tree hanging in the Maremagnum port of Barcelona, inviting you to look up at it from underneath and hence connect the tree with the floor. The tree is made from polystyrene packaging waste (from last year’s Christmas gifts?), cardboard and projected lights (the video of which is on their web site). Their message: recycle! The coolest thing is the way they communicate their mission with a fun video (in Spanish) and photos documenting the ‘making of’.
A more ethical message comes from Estudio Mariscal with a homemade animation, wishing you a Happy 2007! ::Abetus Porex ::Estudio Mariscal

The next YouTube? Viddler.com appears to be having initial growth problems, but what lies beyond the startup page was very, very impressive. The innovation and ideas packed inside this little video uploader is truly unbelievable!

They add a whole ‘Web 3.0′ aspect to video sharing, with ‘Timed Comments’ that refer to exact moments within videos. Specific moments in videos can also get their own unique tags. For example, in a two hour movie that had a single scene with swearing in, people could see exactly where the swearing happens, therefore, (if they wished), they could skip that particular scene.

There are also three video modes that users can set their videos to. Default mode, which is private. Public mode which is, well… available for all, and Shared mode, which allows the video chosen to be shared only with people inside your Viddler social network.

One of my favourite parts of Viddler is that rather than just the standard YouTube video search, you can search directly within a particular video for the bit that interests you! This is a major step forward and lets you find specific information inside long videos, easily and accurately.

You can embed the videos into your site, just like with YouTube, Google Video, Revver & others easily, with no hassle. Just an ‘embed’ tag and you’re done. Except, with the fancy new features in Viddler, that doesn’t have to be it. You can choose to direct visitors to an exact moment of your video, rather than just start them at the beginning. This is great, again for finding the specific bit of a video quickly.

viddlershot.jpg

The ability to record as it happens to Viddler by using your webcam is a seriously nifty feature. This is live vlogging! Who knows, maybe next time Apple hosts a big product launch (like their recent “Showtime” event), we may even get to watch it live.

The developers at Viddler also started up a development and progress blog on the website, though there isn’t much to read at the moment, as the whole site is relatively new.

The design of the website itself is sleek and swish, with enough round corners to satisfy even the most picky Web 2.0 boffin smile. The player design has a nice black finish and is highly functional, packed with plenty of the aforementioned features to keep you busy on these long, winter nights.

If there was ever to be a viable alternative to the popular video networking sites, this would have to be it, packed with features galore that will keep fellow geeks like me drooling for hours. I’ve had brilliant fun experimenting with the website, and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a more creative, presentable and practical way of sharing videos.

Even if you plan to upload a really huge video, there are no worries involved. Viddler excels itself and offers up to 500MB of storage per each individual video. Whether you plan to upload full HD clips, or movies, then Viddler won’t grumble and complain. Taking it in its stride, the service manages videos well and efficiently.

foundry.jpg The Green Light Trust is an environmental charity that helps children become involved in the community by helping to plant local woodlands. When the Trust decided to build a new office, they wanted it to have “deep green principles”. With the help of architects specialising in sustainable construction, they embarked upon a project which is not just carbon neutral, but carbon-negative. All the materials and labour were to be sourced from within a twenty mile radius. Volunteers did much of the work. They moved an existing shed and re-used the timbers, using limewash, not toxic chemicals, to protect against infestation. The bricks are made of local hemp and lime, and are insulators as well as being carbon negative since hemp absorbs carbon dioxide. The interior walls were made of wattle and daub, from their own woodland hazel trees and local clay. They used linseed oil paint. There are solar panels, and the sewage is carried out through their own reedbed system. Rainwater is recycled from the roof and the whole place is heated with a woodchip boiler running on timber from the woods. The building won an architectural sustainability award this year, and rightfully so. :: Green Light Trust via :: The Times
