Washington DC to Require Green Buildings
Washington DC has a proposal on the table to require construction companies and developers to use the standards developed by the Green Building Council for all new construction by 2012. Within 2 years DC owned projects would be subject to the rule, by 2009 any building getting 20% public financing would have be subject, and by 2012 any new building greater than 50,000 sq feet would be subject to the rule. This will evidently apply to public housing projects. I am unclear whether Federal Projects would be subject to this rule. My guess is that they would be unless congress specifically exempts them.
This passed in a preliminary vote (unanimous) in the DC City Council, but we’ll see how it shakes out now that more lobbying groups are aware of the proposal » original news
