One hot digital camera - the Canon SD 630

I recently purchased a new digital camera. After having used a Sony Cybershot for 4 years, the memory stick’s slow write speed finally drove me over the edge. I have been looking at Canon digital cameras for a while, mainly because they were both compact and used the SD card format.

After having done a bit of research, and waiting on some price drops, I settled on the Canon SD 630.

This camera I must say is awesome! The 3 inch lcd screen is the largest in its class, and it is super bright. There are loads of manual settings which you can read in the tech specs, but for an amateur like me, its a bit overwhelming. The greatest thing about the camera is it’s slim profile design and when coupled with a fast sd card, the pictures can be taken in a snap. When I mean a snap, I mean it. The auto focus is quick and there is little to no lag time between the time when pressing the shutter button to the picture being taken.

Some con’s of the camera is that it scratches pretty easily. I’ve had the camera for about 2 weeks and it looks like it’s been through a grinder. Granted this camera does spend most of its time in my pocket, but still. Some sort of scratch resistant case and lcd would have been great.

Then there’s the batter/sd card compartment. It doesn’t really lock. I had quite a few times when after taking a picture, my thumb would inadvertently ‘pull’ on the battery cover, and thus disabling the camera. I found this to be too easy to do. It would have been great if there was some sort of latch, so that this type of thing does not happen as often.

Overall, this has been a great camera. I just need to look for something to cover the lcd screen. I am thinking of using a treo screen cover, but we’ll see how that turns out.

If you are in need or want of a new digital camera, then this is a great one for you. Of course if you’d like to save a few bucks, you could get it’s almost twin, the SD 600. The main difference between the two is the lcd size, and the SD 630 does not have a regular view finder. Something I never used, but if you like to save battery life, then get teh 600, so you could turn off the lcd. This is something you cannot do on the SD 630.

So what are you waiting for? Go grab one!
