Videogames as a scape goat
Stateside Do I sell?

It is quite disconcerting to read so many articles that say that videogames is the cause of violence. That games like Grand Theft Auto, World of Warcraft, and others are are the reasons why there is such an increase in violence. It’s not only videogames that are the cause of all of this. It’s also cell phones, computers, pagers, iPods, RFID tags, tv, the internet, and even shoes.

What’s interesting to note is how soon people forget the previous supposed causes of violence.

Videogames is just the violence flavor of the moment, especially Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

But if anyone recalls, there were loads of other things to blame for the increase in violence.

When I was growing up, the biggest reason for violence was shoes. Yes, shoes. More specifically it was the latest Nike Air Jordans or pumps. Kids actually got killed for these.

Then you had those that killed you for your 14 kt gold chain that your mama got you.

Then when cool gadgets appeared, you got killed for them as well. These included pagers and cell phones.

Now it’s iPods that people get killed over.

Yet the root cause is videogames? The root cause is that we are humans that were programmed to be violent. That’s how we survived. That’s how we eliminate competition. That’s why there are no cro-magnons or homo habilis or neanderthals around. We killed them all! We eliminated the competition.

Overtime though, we learned that there needs to be rules for society to develop and flourish. There needs to be rights and wrongs.

Yet there is still violence. It seems like there is so much more, because that’s all that the news reports.

Take away our innate violent tendencies, who’s to blame? Bad parenting. Simple. Fin. End of story. It’s not technology, at least not directly, its not videogames, and its not the media. It’s bad parenting, because parents today are more self involved then they were just a generation ago. I work with parents that work hard and granted they deserve to play, but if they have a kid or kids, their priority is to raise that kid. Yet i find these parents go out more frequently then single co-workers and they tend to work longer hours, while their kid is at home with whatever sitter. Stop blaming other things because its simple!

Blame yourself and leave my videogames alone!
