When to tech it down a notch
I just read this interesting little column from Wired. Pretty interesting in regards to how technology should be used for everyday life.
I personally think technology should be used to enhance your life, by making things easier, more efficient, and faster. But there’s the whole thing about just because you can do it, doesn’t mean you should do it. I like the line he uses when he states that using a computer is like masturbation. It’s best done in the privacy of your own home. This is in regards to working on your laptop in a cafe. Yes, I’ve done it. I’m guilty of it, but I have toned it down a bit. Which is why I’m shopping around for a smartphone or a kick ass pda. Really though, it’s all about living your life and communicating with others as opposed to just working anywhere and everywhere just because you can.
I hate it when you’re hanging out with friends and they are checking their text messages, email or whatnot while talking to you. Shoot, I hate it when they are on the phone. If it’s business cool. But 9 out of 9 times it’s not.
So if you are hankering to check your email or text message take a second to realize that you aren’t in an office and that you need to sit and enjoy the day.
Having taken time out away from tech stuff every so often, I know that I always feel more energized after a day without tech. I don’t mean leaving everything behind, I still take my phone, but that’s it. I leave my iPod so that I can listen to the sounds around me, I leave my laptop, so I can see the world around me, and I leave my phone off, so that I won’t be distrubed by the world around me.
The next time you are hanging out with me and you wonder if I’m agitated because you are on the phone, checking your email or texting, you now know the answer. STOP IT!
