TiVo for the radio

Want a Tivo for your radio? First you’d have to get XM satellite radio service and buy this not so little gadget. This XM player by Delphi shows what’s to come from gadget makers. This player allows you to listen to your tunes anywhere, from in the car, walkin’ around and in your house. This way you’re getting your money’s worth.

If you haven’t heard about satellite radio, then this little piece isn’t for you. The only thing that is really great about satellite radio service is that it’s essentially commercial free. With regular radio, you have 20 minutes of ads per hour. That’s a lot of ads. Satellite radio on the other hand doesn’t have this problem. This is really awesome for people like me that get antsy when an ad comes on and jumping around from station to station, with the ultimate slap in the face being when all of the presets are on commercials.

My one gripe with the service is that it’s pretty expensive. Not the service so much, but the cost of the equipment. They haven’t figured out how to subsidize the cost of the equipment in the monthly fees yet. That would really make the service take off. I would be cool to get it if I could pay a couple bucks more per month for the service, but get the equipment for free, like the MyFi player. Then I wouldn’t mind so much.

Delphi MyFi XM2GO Portable XM Satellite Radio Receiver with Home / Car KitsThe best thing that could happen though on top of the subsidized equipment would be for XM and Sirius radio to get together and share their programming. That’d be kick ass. That would be the ultimate in satellite radio.

But what’s better than that? Satellite radio+satellite tv service coupled to a MyFi like device with equipment that is subsidized. Now that would totally rock! Imagine a player that can do both. Now imagine a service that doesn’t cost that much more because the satellite tv company bought the satellite radio company and is just making the service another add-on.

Enough dreaming. For now, if you have a penchant of changing stations and want something that is fun and commercial free choose satellite radio. Now your only problem would be which service to get.
