C|Net has a great article about people wanting quieter computers.

Really? No kidding! This could be the new way manufacturers will compete from now on. Along with form factor. Computer manufacturers will go from processing speed to silence.

Yes form factor will also come into play, but not as much as the sound of a whirring machine under the desk. For instance, I mostly use my laptop because it’s quieter than using my desktop. What’s interesting is that my laptop and desktop are about the same in terms of specs, but the laptop is so much quieter. I can’t stand the sound of the fan from my desktop.

As computers have moved to faster and hotter processors and video cards are now coming with their own fans, it’s only normal to have a computer that sounds like a jet engine. Unless you want to spend a few hundred (at least) on bigger heat sinks or on a water cooler. But most of these are add-ons unless you buy your machine from a specialized place, like Alienware.

In the next couple of years, I expect to see computers that wil come with decibel (db) ratings saying how quiet they are in lieu of the current speed ratings.

I want my quiet machine now! But until sound deadening devices become a norm, I will just wait and see.

One thing to note is how Apple has made the G5 machines super quiet by designing the machine so that it utilizes its many fans to move the heat and still keep it quiet, vs the current method of really having just one big fan to dissipate all of the heat.

Everyone should copy Apple’s G5 design, or at least put more into the design of the inside of a computer to effectively move heat, to make life less noisy.

Remember what the movie’s say: Silence is golden. In this case, it can be worth billions.
