DirecTV makes own PVR
Could this be the end of TiVo? DirecTV, which is one of the main partnerships that TiVo has to get subscribers to use their box, has announced that they will be offering their own PVR that will have some better specs than the TiVo. It will have 100 hours of recording, dual tuners, and some interactive services.
This doesn’t bode well for TiVo. The industry that they created seems to have enveloped them. Similar to what happened to Netscape. TiVo needs start cranking out boxes that doesn’t cost so much and get rid of that subscription fee. The main thing about these other PVR’s is that cable and satelite companies are only charging customers $5-15 extra per month. That’s not much more for all of the capabilities, where as TiVo charges a few hundred bucks for there’s.
This upcoming year we should see some exciting changes in this arena. I still like TiVo because its user interface is really intuitive, but if I was offered a better box with no subscription fees and only pay $5 a month, I think I’d know where I’d go. I mean there’s company loyalty, and then there’s just saving moolah.
