Bittorrent revisited
C| Net has some great info about eXeem and other bit torrent based sharing programs. eXeem has the most steam as they are supposedly attached to the Suprnova.org site that was the biggest site for getting bit torrent seeds.
There are also some other great progs out there that utilize the bit torrent technology. We’ll have to see which ones work well and which ones will stay around when they get sued.

Damn you mac! So here’s this interesting software product that looks ridiculously easy to use…and you got it…it’s for the mac.
It’s a cataloguing software where you can house all of the info of your books and movies. This is pretty cool, as you can perform searches and know what you have in stock. There will also be a lender feature in the next version so you can keep track of who has what. This is really spiffy as I have lost so countless cds and dvds because I just can’t remember who the heck took them!
I know there are pc based softwares that do this, but I haven’t seen anything that worked as simply. With this one, you could scan the barcode using the web cam. Pretty spiffy.
That’s it. No more Apple stuff….for now.
Switch to Apple…part deux
Here’s the deal. Hopefully this will fully make you understand why I, a life long pc user and pc advocate, am thinking about switchng to Apple. Or at least give it a try. It’s not all about price!
Please get that through your head. Yes the Mac mini is cheaper, and truly makes the Apple affordable, but that’s not the only reason to make the move. It just makes it easier. People seem to only want to talk about price. Why? So what if you can get a better pc for cheaper or at the same price? When I talk about cars, I dont talk about just price. I mean, I talk about everything it has to offer, amenities, safety, etc. So why do that with computers? You wouldnt want to buy a car if you knew it was just going to break down all of the time and cost you loads of money in the long run right? Remember the Hyundai’s of yore? This is the same thing with pc’s.
The biggest things for me to making the switch are the following:
Apple has a more stable OS.
This wont come as a surprise to many who are familiar with UNIX, but I am really up to HERE with all of the BSOD (blue screen of deaths) I get when working on my laptop. Especially when I have been working on financial projections. After not getting it for a few months, I now get it twice a day. Whats the remedy? Reformat my harddrive, and reinstall everything. I am tired of doing this. Especially when it takes me a better part of 2 days to get my computer back up to speed. Backups don’t help, as the system settings dont carry over like they say they would.
Better security.
Even though this could be due to Apple not having a big market share, which is why virus writers don’t attack it, it’s still better than having to update my machines almost everyday and worry about possible attacks.
Widgets.
One of the greatest inventions ever is the widgets for Apple. Granted they now have it for the pc, it just isn’t the same. I’ve done a lot of work onto some of my machines such as placing a dock bar to emulate the Apple’s dock bar so I can be more productive, but widgets take the cake. These little things can get you loads of information at a glance, working seamlessly in the background.
Expose.
If you work with multiple programs at the same time and want to be able to select one at a quick glance. This function is for you. When I first played with this feature I was enthralled. It’s one of those ideas that you just don’t know how you ever lived without. Yet I live without it everyday, and I kick myself in the head when I have 15 windows opened and need to find something quick.
Ease of use.
The pc to me has become quite alien to me lately, even though I worked as a pc tech and IT manager, these things just don’t make sense. Especially when they break down, but that’s another story. Whenever I get onto an Apple machine, things just seem to be where I would naturally think they would be, such as network controls.
All of these plus thousands of other reasons say give it a try. It can’t hurt. You won’t have to use the Mac as your main computer if you dont want to. You can just get used to it and play with it and see if maybe you’d want to upgrade to the G5.
OS updated regularly.
Apple is great at doing updates for the OS and giving it whiz bang features that Microsoft always tries to emulate, but it takes them years. Longhorn, their next OS was supposed to come out last year, then later this year, and now by last count wont come out until sometime in ‘06. Thats about 5 years on the same OS. Way too long for an update.
Thats my final take. Give it a shot.

Shuffle up and play!
Do the shuffle! *doo doo doo doo doo* do the shuffle! Sounds great in my head to the “do the hustle” sound track.
Now that Steve and Co. has joined the flash player market with the iPod Shuffle, you might be asking yourself. Is it worth it?
Well…that all depends on what you want. If you already have an iPod and just want something to take to the gym without worrying then definitely. If you are new the mp3 player market, I would say hold off, unless you really want to join the Apple revolution.
Price alone, you can’t beat it. It’s a 1GB flash player for only $149. Cheaper than most other 1GB flash players out there, but there are other reasons why I wouldn’t get it.
First off. No display. This doesn’t bother most people as they tend to really just want to listen to their music and never look at the screen. For me, this can be problematic, as there are definitely times when I want to look at the screen to see what song is on, or scroll through and find a particular song I just have to listen to.
Secondly. No fm tuner. There are players out there like the Creative Muvo series that havea built in FM tuner. Why do I want an FM tuner? Because I want to be able to listen to some talk shows (Kevin and Bean) when I’m at the gym or wherever. And those times when I am tired of my mp3s. Then there is the whole tuning into the tvs at the gym so I can watch my CNN…ok. ok. You got me. I really need my dose of “The View” everyday or I just feel sick. ..You happy?!
Thirdly…well nothing third.
Fourthly. Snap cover? What year is this? Why don’t I like snap covers? Simple. Because I tend to lose the cover. I wonder why they didn’t make a swivel out usb plug. That would have ruled.
On the flipside.
The greatest thing that Apple did was incorporate a rechargeable battery, that can last for 12 hours between charges. This in itself can be worth it potentially saving you some money over a year’s usage. Steve says it can save you a $100s your first year. I dont know about hundreds, but definitely some good coinage.
What’s holding me back? Not really sure. Do I really want another flash player? Granted its an Apple flash player. Or do I hold out for a wee bit more and get an updated ipod mini or even a larger storage iPod photo?
So much waiting! I can’t stand it!
Bottom line. Not too shabby if you want to get a great designed player with Apple’s stamp of approval as well as access to their badass ITMS. Besides, $149 for a 1Gb aint too bad.
But if yer a storage and feature whore like me, then take a pass on this bad boy. But do put it onto your wishlist.
Switch to Apple?
YES!
For years when people have asked me if they should buy an Apple or stick with a pc, I would first ask them, what they plan on using it for. If was for something other than graphics or movie editing, I would tell them stick with pc. But then they’d say that Apple has cooler products and stuff. I would just say, tuff!
My main reason for telling them to stick with a pc wasn’t because of the cost of the pc’s themselves, but its the cost of software for Apple. If you need things like Mac Office and the other suites, it was quite costly. But now, Apple has introduced not only a great product called the Mac mini, which is only $499, but they also have the iLife suite and now…iWorks. It’s the much needed update to the AppleWorks set of software, but now it really makes switching sense. As it only costs $75! You would probably still want to get Mac Office, but with the introduction of of all of the suites that Apple has to offer, why not make the switch?
This and the fact that the new os update, Tiger, will have a bunch of features that really will make using a computer fun and easy, like their Spotlight feature, the Dashboard, and the fact that it’s pretty much virus free makes it a worthy purchase.
I can’t say enough about the Apple line of products. Once the updated OS is offered on the Mac mini during shipping, I am so there. The sheer size of it is ridiculous. It can fit in the palm of your hand with a height that is half that of the ipod mini. If you were looking for a reason to try out the Mac this would be the way to do it. It’s affordable and looks darn snazzy!

Amazon has a deal right now for dvd-r’s. You can get a 100pack of verbatims (which are really good) for $24.99 after rebates. Dvd+r for 29.99. Not a bad deal.
They are currently out of stock but the rebate expires end of hte month, and most likely they will have more in stock and ship before then.
